Retailer-exclusive interpretations of an iconic brand and package design refresh

Our design team was engaged by Playmates Toys to create packaging for retailer-exclusive Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Re-Ignition products for Walmart and Target.

The goal was to give each product’s package its own unique look, while hinting at select visual cues we had established for the core Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Re-Ignition packaging, so that all products associated with the newly-refreshed brand would maintain a visually cohesive aesthetic.

The retailer-exclusive product packaging also needed to take a deeper dive into the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers brand story and leverage a more sophisticated approach to its design. Treating retailer-exclusive packaging in this manner adds perceived value and further conveys exclusivity through collector-inspired attributes, such as detailed illustrated components and unique display options.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Re-Ignition Action Figure 6-Pack

The Walmart-exclusive product includes 6 individual Power Rangers action figure window boxes contained within a closed box outer structure. Our solution for the individual window boxes incorporates each Power Ranger’s helmet as a key graphic element that wraps from the front panel over the left side panel to the back of the package. The window die-cut contours around the helmet and wraps to the right side of the package with a lightning bolt-inspired edge. The outer structure features all 6 helmets as they would appear if the individual window boxes were positioned with the left side panels aligned. It also includes poses of all 6 Power Rangers in action.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Re-Ignition Auto-Morphin Battle Pack

The Target-exclusive product contains 5 Auto-Morphin Power Rangers action figures and an exclusive Evil Space Alien Goldar action figure with wing-flapping action. Our solution for this window box package is designed to appear as if the action figures are contained within Megazord’s head, with the insert illustrated to look like the interior of the cockpit control room in monochromatic tones of green.
