Star Wars: The Force Awakens Style Guide

When Lucasfilm began developing the style guide for the first film from the last Star Wars saga trilogy, Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, we were asked to contribute design assets for the licensing program. As part of this project, Design Force, Inc. president, Ted Mininni, was asked to create a series of pencil illustrations of the film’s key characters and spacecraft in a “sketch” style inspired by some of the original concept art created by Ralph McQuarrie and Joe Johnston for the first Star Wars film, Episode IV: A New Hope.

To achieve the proper technique, Ted evolved his style to be a bit more gestural, with dense black areas and soft mid-tones, which he added digitally.
